mumble
Mumble is a voice over IP or VOIP application designed primarily for gamers. The Mumble application is similar to Ventrilo and Teamspeak. Mumble uses a client-server architecture letting users talk to each other while connected to the Mumble server called Murmur. Mumble contains a simple admin interface and features a high quality audio codec with low latency. All communication is encrypted to ensure user privacy.
Logging in to Mumble servers provide users with a root channel and a hierarchical tree underneath it. Mumble uses Speex audio codec for voice, noise reduction and automatic gain control. The CELT audio codec was added starting with Mumble version 1.2. Mumble is optimized for low latency resulting in faster communication. Mumble has positional audio which modifies audio based on a player’s position within a video game.
Mumble is open-source and therefore is free. There are no user limits. You can have as many users as you like as long as your web server can handle it, in terms of CPU usage, memory, and monthly transfer rate. Similar to Ventrilo and Teamspeak, you cab sign up with several hosting companies that offer Mumble. If you’re adventurous enough, you can install Mumble on a Linux server or a VPS server, which gives you complete freedom.
